Asthma and COPD

Asthma is a long-term inflammatory disease of the airways in the lungs. It can be made worse by exposure to irritants such as tobacco smoke and other air pollutants. COPD is a general term for progressive lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is not clear what causes COPD but it develops over time due to years of smoking or being exposed to lung irritants. The symptoms include persistent coughing and shortness of breath.

The Foracort inhalerrelieves the symptoms of both asthma and COPD. It works by inhibiting the release of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation and by relaxing the muscles in the lungs. The inhaler can be used daily to help control symptoms and prevent flare-ups. It also helps to improve exercise capacity.

Before using the inhaler, make sure your hands are clean and dry. Remove the inhaler cap and shake it to mix the medicine evenly. Then, take a slow deep breath through your mouth. Hold your breath and push down on the mouthpiece until you hear a whistling sound, then breathe out slowly. For best results, use a spacer with the inhaler.

Once you have finished using the inhaler, close the mouthpiece and put the dark brown body of the inhaler back together. You may need to "prime" the inhaler, by spraying it into the air 4 times. This allows the inhaler to load the medicine into the small spacer. Then, fit the inhaler into the opening at the end of the spacer and close your lips around it. Push down on the inhaler to release the medicine.

After using the inhaler, you should rinse the inhaler with clean water to keep it clean. You should also wash the two halves of the inhaler every two weeks, removing the empty capsule shell from the small hole in the top of the inhaler.

Each Foracort inhaler has a white disk with numbers in the side indicator window that shows how many doses are left after each use. Each disk has eight blisters containing the medicine. If the number in the window turns from green to red, it is time for a new inhaler.
